On Aug. 14, 1993, pilgrims gathered at the Cathedral for a Mass with the Holy Father, where he spoke of the need for a New Evangelization in the Church. Also on that day, thousands gathered at McNichols Arena where Pope St. John Paul II joined them in prayer as he celebrated the Liturgy of the Word.

Quoting from Sacred Scripture, the pope told those gathered, “Upon arriving in Denver, I lifted up my eyes towards the splendor of the Rocky Mountains whose majesty and power recall that all our help comes from the Lord who has made heaven and earth. He alone is the rock of our salvation. God has given me the grace to join my voice with yours in praising and thanking our Heavenly Father for the ‘mighty works’ that he has accomplished since the Gospel was first preached in this region.”
