St. Dominic Catholic Church in Denver, in collaboration with the Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus in Chicago, Illinois, invites all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Denver to one of the largest displays of the relics of St. Jude Thaddeus, which will take place at the end of this month.
The relic is from the arm of St. Jude Thaddeus, which will visit the parishes of St. Dominic and St. Mary Magdalene as part of a “Lenten Mission” between February 27 and March 1. The relic of St. Jude Thaddeus travels from the Shrine of St. Jude in Chicago, Illinois, a ministry that since 1929 has offered hope to the most vulnerable and served immigrants from all over the world since its founding.
The relic of the forearm of St. Jude Thaddeus was given to the shrine in 1949 during its 20th anniversary of the dedication of the shrine. Today, the shrine has the forearm relic of St. Jude, along with three other smaller relics that are on display for public veneration.
According to the shrine’s website, “After his martyrdom, the body of St. Jude was buried temporarily in Mesopotamia and them given permanent internment in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome with the other Apostles. His forearm was incased in a silver reliquary and located for many centuries in Armenia. At the beginning of the 18th century, Armenian Dominican Missionaries left Armenia because of the Moslem persecution and brought the relic to Smyrna, Turkey. After another round of persecutions, the relic was given to the Dominicans in Turin, Italy. In 1949, the Dominican Province of St. Peter Martyr in Turin presented the relic to us on the 20th anniversary of our Shrine’s dedication to St. Jude.”
The forearm of St. Jude Thaddeus in a silver reliquary is considered the largest relic of an apostle located outside of Europe.
St. Jude Thaddeus is considered the patron saint of desperate situations and forgotten causes and is one of the most beloved saints among Catholics. He was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, brother of James. The feast of St. Jude Thaddeus is celebrated on Oct. 28, together with the feast of St. Simon, since, according to ancient tradition, they preached the word of God together and suffered martyrdom together.
"All are invited to join February 27 at St. Dominic, and February 28 at St. Mary Magdalene," said Daniela Cabrera, Executive Assistant of St. Dominic Parish in Denver. "We will conclude with Mass and veneration of the relic of St. Jude on March 1 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Dominic Parish."
