As the new judicial year begins, lawyers from around the archdiocese are preparing to come together for the annual Red Mass on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Denver. A time-honored tradition held locally on the Sunday before the U.S. Supreme Court’s term begins, the special Mass is an opportunity for all legal professionals to come together and implore the Holy Spirit’s guidance as they reflect on the profound responsibilities of their roles. Originating in Europe during the High Middle Ages, the Red Mass derives its name from the red vestments traditionally worn, symbolizing the tongues of fire from Pentecost, the blood of martyrdom and the scarlet robes once worn by royal judges. This rich history underscores the Mass’ importance in both spiritual and professional realms. First celebrated in the Archdiocese of Denver in the 1950s, the Red Mass has become a cornerstone of the Catholic Lawyers Guild’s mission. The Guild, founded by a group of Catholic lawyers and judges in the Denver metro area, strives to uphold high standards of ethical and moral principles within the legal profession. “In an age when the legal profession suffers in its role as an ethical and responsible model for society, the Colorado Catholic Lawyers Guild offers to all Catholic lawyers, but especially to those Catholic lawyers concerned about the current status of our profession, an opportunity to become a part of the Guild’s effort to promote justice and to bring legal disputes to resolution in a manner that dignifies our calling,” the organization’s mission statement reads. A vital part of that mission, the annual Red Mass offers attendees the opportunity to take time in reflection and renewal, receiving the guidance of the Holy Spirit to “promote justice and to bring legal disputes to resolution in a manner that dignifies calling.” The Red Mass is not limited to Catholics or those directly involved in the Guild. Judges, lawyers, law school professors, law students and government officials of all faiths are welcome and encouraged to attend. All legal professionals who seek divine guidance while pursuing justice will find a blessed opportunity for prayer and reflection in the annual Red Mass. Following the Mass, attendees are invited to a brunch where they can continue to engage in meaningful conversation and fellowship. In addition to the Red Mass, the Catholic Lawyers Guild hosts several other events throughout the year, including their Annual Dinner, where prestigious awards are presented, legal seminars and spring luncheons, which address pertinent issues facing Catholic attorneys. More information about joining the Guild and participating in its activities can be found on its website.
