As the holidays draw near, an annual tradition of the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, “Lessons and Carols,” returns as well. Featuring Father Samuel Morehead, rector of the Cathedral Basilica, and the Cathedral Choir under the direction of Phil Bordeleau, the Cathedral’s director of sacred music and organist, the concert of lessons in holiday hymns will take place at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in the Cathedral Basilica.
Over the last several years, Concerts at the Cathedral Basilica re-established a tradition from the Cathedral’s early days while highlighting the beauty of sacred music. The concert series included weekly sacred music performances, offering the public a place to gather and enjoy an hour of holy harmonies free of charge.
After a decades-long break, the music ministry of the Cathedral Basilica, led by Bordeleau, seeks to do the same, especially through the annual Lessons and Carols event. This festive addition to the concert lineup offers the audience a more interactive experience, as attendees are invited to sing along in preparation for Christ’s coming at Christmas.
“An outreach of the Cathedral’s music ministry, the concert series provides important sacred music to those who may not otherwise have an opportunity to visit the Cathedral and hear its musicians during Mass,” Bordeleau said. “Because the concerts are not ticketed events (only a free-will offering is collected), we never turn anyone away from the opportunity to hear these masterworks of sacred music. The concerts also keep the Cathedral’s music ministry in the collective minds of the musical community of Denver, bearing witness of the commitment to fine musical art in the Cathedral Basilica.”
Now in its tenth season, Concerts at the Cathedral Basilica showcase programs played on the Cathedral’s incredible pipe organ, choral and instrumental ensembles and vocal soloists. All are welcome to enjoy the concerts at no cost; a free-will offering is appreciated and shared with the artists to defray the series’ expenses.
