WATCH: 50,000 fans sing “Happy Birthday” to Peggy Coppom, CU superfan and faithful Catholic

Updated: Dec 18, 2024

She’s famous in Boulder, both for her deep devotion and for her faithful fandom of Colorado’s own Buffaloes.

Six days a week, you’ll find her in the pews at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Boulder. On Saturdays, she cheers on her CU Buffs.

Tuesday, Peggy Coppom will celebrate 100 years — complete with a CU women’s basketball game!

Ahead of her centenary, Peggy was sure to attend the University of Colorado Boulder’s game against the University of Utah. During the game, the crowd of more than 50,000 sang “Happy Birthday” to the superfan.

“Miss Peggy, in her own tremendous, loving way, she gives all of us hope,” said Deion Sanders, head coach for the CU Buffs, who met Peggy last year. “She gives all of us the unspeakable joy, the love, the respect. You know how many decades that we’re apart? But we still found one another? I thank God for that.”

Even as Peggy celebrated over the weekend, she tearfully remembered her sister, Betty Hoover, who passed away in August 2020. The twin sisters had attended countless CU games together, becoming legendary fixtures at Buff games.

“I’m crying partly because I can’t believe all of you would come to be with me today, and I really feel bad that Betty is not with me,” she said. “She was with me when we started all this.”
