Earlier this year, Pope Francis issued a motu proprio restricting Masses celebrated in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite, more popularly known as the Latin Mass.
In accordance with the Holy Father’s motu proprio, Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila has issued a new decree explaining how Traditionis Custodes will be implemented among the archdiocese’s parishes and pastors. In summary, the parishes and priests in the archdiocese that already celebrate the extraordinary form of the Latin Rite will be allowed to continue to do so under the new decree. Priests who do not currently have permission to celebrate the extraordinary form and wish to celebrate it at their parishes must send a formal request to the archbishop, which will then be submitted to Rome. Lastly, St. John Vianney and Redemptoris Mater seminaries will not train priests to celebrate the extraordinary form of the Latin Rite.
In the official decree, Archbishop Aquila notes that the continuation of the extraordinary form of the Mass at the parishes where it has been established “will contribute to the spiritual good of the faithful.” He also asks that “all priests ministering in the Archdiocese of Denver are to show reverence in celebrating the Mass, following the rubrics and words in the Missal, whether according to the 1962 Roman Missal or to the current Roman Missal.”
